Noravank monastery glowing against the red cliffs of the Amaghu gorge

Slow Vayots Dzor

Stay long enough to taste the region, not just photograph it — two nights in the wine country most tours give two hours.

Highlights

  • Noravank in the late afternoon, after the day-tour crowds have started leaving
  • A village cellar where wine is poured from a jug by the man who made it
  • Yeghegis: a medieval valley with a story on every stone, and almost no visitors
  • Dinner with a winemaking family, not a folklore show
  • A wine version and an equally good no-alcohol version — your choice

Who this suitsCouples and friends who would rather know one region well than wave at four. Works beautifully as a wine trip or, in the no-alcohol version, as a food-and-valleys trip.

Day by day

Day1

Khor Virap, Noravank and into the valley

South with Ararat filling the windscreen: Khor Virap and its pit, then the red gorge of Noravank timed for the soft light, when most visitors are already on the bus north. A first cellar at Areni before dinner at the guesthouse.

Day2

Wine, villages and Yeghegis

A morning among old bush vines with a boutique producer, then a long family lunch. In the afternoon, the Yeghegis valley: Zorats church with its open-air altar, the medieval Jewish cemetery found in 1996, and Smbataberd fortress on its ridge for those who fancy the walk up.

Day3

Over the pass and home

A slow morning — the village bakery is worth it — then over the Vardenyats pass at 2,410 metres to the Selim caravanserai of 1332, where the Silk Road traffic sheltered. Down past Lake Sevan’s southern shore and back to Yerevan by late afternoon.
