Who this suitsWalkers who want six to eighteen kilometres a day and a bed at the end of it.
FitnessYou should be comfortable walking 12–16 km on uneven ground with 600 m of ascent, on consecutive days. The Aragats summit day is the hardest. Write to us and describe your last long walk and we will tell you honestly whether this fits.
Arrival, kit check, route briefing and dinner. We look at everyone's boots — genuinely, because it saves a week of blisters.
A warm-up day. Down from Garni temple into the Azat gorge, along the river past the Symphony of Stones columns, and up to the ruins of Havuts Tar across the valley. Geghard in the late afternoon.
North to the forest. A marked section of the Transcaucasian Trail through beech and hornbeam to Matosavank and Jukhtak Vank, dropping to Parz Lake.
A longer day over the ridge to Gosh, ending at Goshavank and its openwork khachkar of 1291. About 600 metres of ascent, spread out.
West to Aragats. An afternoon walk on the plateau at around 3,200 metres to let everyone adjust, with the cosmic-ray station huts below and nothing else in sight.
An early start for the south summit at 3,888 metres — the most accessible of the four peaks, on scree and snowfield, about six hours round trip. Down in the afternoon and south to Vayots Dzor.
A canyon walk above Noravank with vultures on the thermals, then south to Goris and a walk down into Old Khndzoresk among the cave dwellings.
The cable car across the gorge, the monastery, and the long drive north with a stop at Khor Virap for Ararat before your transfer.
